Terms of use
RateMySolar is an information tool. It reads a solar contract and compares its terms with published figures. It does not give advice, and using it does not make anyone your agent, adviser or consultant. These terms say what that means in practice.
Not a law firm. RateMySolar is not a law firm, and no one at RateMySolar acts as your attorney. A report is not a legal review of a contract and does not say what any term means for you legally. It summarizes key terms and grades them against published data and set criteria. For a legal review, talk to a licensed attorney in your state. Before each upload you are asked to confirm that you understand this.
What the report is
Each report is an estimate. Grades compare what a contract says with public benchmarks: state utility rates, typical installed prices and modelled solar production. The figures can be wrong, out of date, or read incorrectly from the document.
Prepared with the help of AI. Artificial intelligence reads the contract and drafts parts of each report. Most grades are then measured by fixed rules against published figures, but everything starts from the AI’s reading of the document, and AI can misread a page, miss a term, or state something that is not true. Reports are therefore only partly reliable. They are a starting point for questions, not a substitute for reading the contract or for professional advice.
Estimates and outside information. Balances, amounts still to pay, buyout ranges, calculator results and the transfer timeline are estimates worked out from the contract terms and typical figures, not quotes; the solar company’s or lender’s written figures are the ones that count. State rules, company status (including bankruptcies and who now services a contract) and transfer notice periods come from public sources that can change or be out of date.
A report is not financial, legal, tax, real estate, lending or appraisal advice, and it is not a recommendation to sign, cancel, buy, sell or assume any contract or home. Check every figure against the agreement and ask the solar company, a lender or a qualified professional before relying on it.
What you upload
Upload only contracts you have the right to share: your own, or a client's with their permission. By uploading, you agree that the terms of the contract, the property address and the grades may be kept and licensed to others as described on the privacy page. Names, signatures, phone numbers, emails and account numbers are removed and never kept.
Don't upload anything unlawful, anything you know to be altered, or files meant to harm the site.
Company names
Reports may name the installer or finance company that appears in a contract, and may describe that company’s status from public records and news reports. A grade describes the terms of that one contract, not the company. If you think a report reads a contract wrong, tell us and we will review it.
Paid reports
What’s free and what’s paid. Your first contract read is free and shows a locked preview of the report. The full report — the five letter grades, the findings behind each grade, the before-closing checklist and transfer timeline, what is left to pay, buyout and paydown figures, warranty and company information, and the MLS listing fields and remarks, and the printable and shareable versions — costs $49.99 (U.S. dollars) per report. After your free preview, a report is paid for before the contract is uploaded. Discount codes work once per device and once per agent account. Each is a one-time payment for that one contract. There is no subscription and nothing renews.
Team and brokerage plans. An office plan gives the agents it covers full reports at no extra charge, up to 10 reports per agent per calendar month (fair use); past that, the regular single-report price applies until the next month. Agents are covered when they sign in with an email address on the office’s domain or on its invite list, and the office is responsible for keeping that list current. Yearly plans cover 12 months from payment and do not renew automatically. Monthly plans renew each month through Stripe until cancelled; cancelling stops the next renewal and coverage ends at the end of the paid month. Prices depend on the number of agents in the office; founding prices are fixed for the first 12 months of a plan. Plans are not transferable to another office.
Reruns. The first rerun of a paid report is free when a new document or figure is added for the same home. Other reruns use the half-price code shown on the report. A rerun reads the contract again, so its grades can move either way.
Promo codes. RateMySolar may issue promo codes that unlock one full report at no charge. A code may be limited in number or time, can be withdrawn at any time, has no cash value, and cannot be exchanged for a refund of a report already paid for.
Payment. Payments are processed by PayPal (PayPal, Venmo or card) or by Stripe (card, Apple Pay or Google Pay) on their own checkout pages, under their own terms. We never see or store card or bank details. The full report unlocks as soon as the payment processor confirms the payment to us. The price shown before you pay is the price charged; if the price changes later, it doesn’t affect a report already bought.
Keeping your report. If you are signed in to a free agent account, the report is saved to that account and can be reopened from your dashboard. Without an account, the report stays open in the browser tab you used, including after a refresh, and is lost when the tab is closed; use the print or save-as-PDF option to keep a copy.
Refunds. Because the report is delivered as soon as payment is confirmed, payments are not refundable except in these cases, where we will refund in full: you were charged but the full report did not unlock; you were charged more than once for the same report; or the document could not be read at all (for example, every grade came back N/A). Ask through the contact form within 30 days of the charge. A report that reads the contract but reaches conclusions you disagree with is not grounds for a refund, but we will review it if you tell us what it got wrong.
Disputes. If you dispute a charge with PayPal, Stripe or your card issuer, access to that report may be suspended while the dispute is open.
Use of the site and who owns it
RateMySolar owns this site and everything on it: the design, text, graphics, the name and sun logo, the grading method and benchmarks, the data compiled from contracts, and the software that reads contracts and builds reports. They are protected by copyright, trademark and other laws. “RateMySolar” and the sun logo are trademarks of RateMySolar.
What you may do. Use the reports, listing fields and PDFs you create here for the property they cover: keep them, print them, and share them with your clients, the other side of the transaction, lenders, escrow and title, and in the listing and marketing for that property.
What you may not do without written permission:
- copy, republish, mirror or frame the site or any substantial part of it, or build a site or service that imitates it;
- scrape, crawl or harvest the site or its reports by automated means (ordinary search-engine indexing is fine), or send contracts or requests to the site’s services other than through the site itself;
- resell, license or bundle reports, grades or the grading as part of another product or service;
- reverse engineer the site, or try to extract its grading method, instructions, benchmarks or stored data;
- remove or alter the RateMySolar name, branding, notices or disclaimers on a report, listing fields or PDF, or use the name or logo in a way that suggests RateMySolar endorses you or a property.
We may block or suspend access for anyone who breaks these rules, and may take any other action the law allows.
No warranty, limited liability
The site and its reports are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, RateMySolar is not liable for any loss or decision based on a report, and its total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid to use the site, if any. Nothing on a shared report changes this.
Who may rely on a report
A report is prepared for the person who runs it. Agents may share it with their clients, the other side of the transaction, lenders, escrow and title (see “What you may do” above), but sharing it doesn’t make anyone else a party to these terms or entitled to rely on it. Anyone who receives a report, handout or listing fields from someone else should check every figure against the contract and with the solar company. RateMySolar owes no duty to anyone other than the person who ran the report, and there are no third-party beneficiaries of these terms.
Your responsibilities
You are responsible for checking a report or listing fields against the contract before you publish, share or rely on them, including anything you put in an MLS, a listing or a disclosure. You agree to defend and indemnify RateMySolar against claims arising from a document you uploaded without the right to do so, from your use of a report, or from your breach of these terms.
Disputes
If there’s a problem, contact us first; most things can be fixed quickly. Any claim that can’t be resolved that way will be decided by binding individual arbitration in Clark County, Nevada, under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that either side may bring an individual claim in small-claims court. Claims may be brought only individually, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class or representative proceeding. Any claim must be brought within one year after it arises. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
